In Anselm’s thinking, the reason why God wants to become human is because God cannot cover the reality of the power of sin that controls human life. The reality of the power of sin in human life deeply hurt His heart. Man’s sin has gone against His holiness. Yet God’s holiness is like consuming fire (Hebrews: 12:29). That is why every sin committed by mankind should be destroyed.
But on the other hand, who among mankind is capable of living in righteousness, holiness and pleasing to Him? Haven’t all humans sinned and no one is righteous before God (Romans 3:9-10). This means that all humans have been under God’s punishment and wrath, so that no one can be saved. If God takes into account human „spiritual achievements“ in the form of their good deeds and acts of worship, then no one will succeed and be able to save himself from His punishment. However, on the other hand, God really loves humanity.
The essence of God is love
(John 4:8). That’s why God wants to forgive humans. To realize His forgiveness, God decided to become a human with the aim that He could become a reconciling sacrifice. God was willing to sacrifice Himself. Because sin originates from human life, the sacrifice made by God must occur in the history of human life, namely through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. So that through Christ’s sacrifice, God can redeem and make atonement for the sins of mankind. That’s why in Corinthians 5:19 Paul said: „For God was reconciling the world to Himself through Christ, not counting their trespasses against them.“
