Because at some level pain seems like it contributes to the ‚goodness‘ of good or as a net source for pleasure and pleasure would be considered ‚good‘. Although you could say the same about pleasure (that the kind of pleasure determines if its good or not).
Pain seems to be what makes our experience so rich – a beer tastes so much better after a long day of work (heavy physical work feels painful). People who work out find the pain of working out meaningful and the challenge of overcoming the pain seems to be part of that.
Death is what gives a focus and meaning to life too -> if I were immortal, I think I would actually have difficulty getting up and doing anything at all.
A life without pain to me seems like not a life that I would want to live – it makes me imagine the people in the movie ‚Wall-E‘: a world without hardship and just endless and meaningless ‚pleasure‘, creating a lazy kind of people. That pleasure wont even really feel nice I think if there is no pain that gives it some ‚weight‘?
So i dont think i would want a world without pain, i appreciate pain for what it is and a certain kind of pain is ‚good‘ as in that it should be here to be experienced, but its hard to say what kind of pain should or shouldnt be here.
